Residual Magnetism Latching Solenoid
Residual Magnetism Latching Solenoid
Hybrid vehicles provide an environmentally friendly choice for consumers today. However, a hybrid presents additional challenges not found in the traditional automobile. One of these challenges is the addition of the higher voltage battery used to power the electrical engine. The higher voltage presents a potential risk if the automobile is ever in an accident. Any emergency personnel working in and around the vehicle to extract passengers could come in contact with the dangerously high voltage of the battery.
In order to eliminate this danger to humans, the manufacturer sought a solution for disconnecting the hybrid’s high voltage battery in the event of an accident without the possibility of the battery connecting again. This would protect all individuals from being shocked as they were trying to exit the vehicle or remove the car from the scene of the accident.
TLX determined that a custom latching solenoid utilizing residual magnetism instead of a permanent magnet was the best solution for this application. The latching solenoid used internal design features to enhance the residual magnetism inherent to all DC solenoids. By applying a pulse of power in either polarity the solenoid could provide exceptional latching force without permanent magnets.
Unlike solenoids that use permanent magnets the unique feature of this residual magnetism latching design is that once unlatched, it will not re-latch without applying power making it the perfect solution to address safety concerns on high voltage vehicles. The residual magnetism latching design is suitable for use in vehicle locks, latches, disconnects and safety cutout applications. Strokes and latching force are flexible depending on the size of the solenoid.
