Companies that provide services, products or materials that are time critical rely on an uninterrupted power supply to run their operations. Interruptions in power due to electrical power capacity-related issues or weather conditions can cost companies thousands of dollars in lost production time, missed deadlines or unhappy customers. For companies where an uninterrupted power supply is crucial, installing a standby power system is vital to maintaining their operations and complying with life and safety codes.

A manufacturer of standby power systems was seeking a solution to provide control of a diesel engine to maintain a constant engine speed under vary electric loads. The power system would monitor the engine speed (RPM) and call for adjusting the throttle to sustain the speed of the engine based on the electrical load on the generator. It was determined that a linear proportional solenoid would be a cost effective and reliable solution for the application. The linear proportional solenoid engineered by TLX provided extreme linearity and repeatability due to its low hysteresis and fast response time.  In addition, the solenoid designed by TLX provided the shock and vibration tolerance required by the manufacturer’s application.

For applications requiring engine, throttle or feedback controls, the linear proportional solenoid provides accurate position control with low hysteresis. This design can be customized to fit a variety of applications with pull or push actuation and also a failsafe operation with spring return. Strokes and forces are flexible depending on solenoid size.
